> What email copywriting services include, what an email copywriter charges per email or retainer in 2026, and the questions to ask before you hire one.

---

TL;DR

- Most email copywriting services sell only the writing, so ask who sends the emails before you compare prices.
- Published per-email prices vary widely, and most single-provider service pages show no price at all.
- Put sending day, footer, opt-out handling and cancellation terms in writing before the first email goes out.
- Run a short paid pilot with a tracking code, then decide on a retainer based on replies and orders.

## What do email copywriting services include, and what do they cost in 2026?

Email copywriting services research your business, write your marketing emails and, with some providers, send them for you. A mid-level freelance copywriter charges $175 to $400 for a single email, per [Mediabistro's 2026 rate table](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/). The trade-off: writing-only help costs less, but the sending, list care and compliance stay on your desk.

**Bottom line**

- Pick a writing-only freelancer if you already send every week and only need better words.
- Pick a done-for-you service if you want the research, writing and sending handled, with no drafts waiting on you.
- Skip it unless you have a list of real past customers. A few hundred clean names is a workable start.

**Is this for you?** Written for owners for whom a professional service fee is a line item, not a debate. It is explicitly not for smaller businesses still finding their footing.

This guide is for owners who are ready to pay for help now. You already know email works. You want to know what you are buying, what it costs, and how to avoid a bad hire.

Before you call anyone, sketch the year. Our [12-month email calendar template](/email-marketing-calendar-template/) shows the slots a writer will fill. Bring it to every sales call. It makes quotes easy to compare.

Two related reads cover ground we skip here. If you are still deciding whether to keep doing it yourself, read [done-for-you email vs DIY Mailchimp](/done-for-you-email-vs-diy-mailchimp/). If you are weighing a big agency against a single writer who learns your voice, read [agency vs owner-voice writer](/email-marketing-agency-vs-owner-voice-writer/).

The rest of this page sticks to buying. What the service includes. What people charge. What we found when we checked 24 pages. What to ask. How to hire in steps.

**Want it written and sent for you?**

Start with the 4-email pilot: four weekly emails researched, written from scratch and sent from your own tool, on a $600 to $1,200 written floor based on list size. See [how it works](/how-it-works/) or call (816) 300-1791.

## Key facts

- Each non-compliant commercial email can draw penalties up to $53,088, per the [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business).
- Opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days, per the [FTC guide](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business).
- Gmail treats senders near 5,000 daily messages to personal accounts as bulk senders ([Gmail FAQ](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14229414?hl=en)).
- Gmail's sender guidelines say to keep reported spam below 0.1% and never reach 0.3% ([Gmail FAQ](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14229414?hl=en)).
- Upwork lists monthly email management retainers at $1,200 to $3,600, as listed on November 2, 2026 ([Upwork](https://www.upwork.com/hire/email-copywriting-freelancers/)).

## What email copywriting services are, and what they are not

Email copywriting is a slice of copywriting: words written to sell, built for the inbox. It sits inside email marketing, which also covers the list, the sending tool, timing and the law. Most providers sell the words only. A done-for-you service sells the words and the sending.

It is not an email platform. Mailchimp, Klaviyo and Constant Contact are software you rent. They do not write for you. It is not cold email to strangers from a bought list. That is a different job with different risks. It is not a full marketing agency that also runs ads and social. For a small business, the useful questions are plain. Who researches? Who writes? Who presses send? Who answers for the footer?

## Our data: what 24 email copywriting pages publish (checked November 2, 2026)

**Method.** On November 2, 2026 we ran three searches: "email copywriting services", "email copywriter rates" and "hire an email copywriter". We took every distinct provider, marketplace or article page returned. We skipped forums, video, social posts and two job-listing boards. That left 24 pages. This is a snapshot of that one day.

We opened 12 in full and judged 12 from search snippets. Nine were opened in the first pass. Later the same day we opened three more snippet pages and corrected their rows; a fourth would not load, so it stays a snippet judgment. For each page we recorded seven things: whether a price is published, the lowest per-email or monthly price shown, the pricing unit, sending or list management, research of the business or its customers, real sample emails on the page, and any mention of consent or CAN-SPAM.

**Limits.** If we could not see it, we counted it as "no" or "not stated". Snippets hide detail, so the 12 snippet pages likely undercount features. Many rate pages are written for freelancers setting prices, not for buyers. One day, one search location.

| Check | Result |
| --- | --- |
| Publishes a price or rate | 11 of 24 |
| Single-provider service page publishes a price | 0 of 4 |
| Includes sending or list management, not only writing | 3 of 24 |
| Mentions research of the business or its customers | 5 of 24 |
| Shows real sample emails on the page | 0 of 24 |
| Mentions consent or CAN-SPAM | 1 of 24 |
| Lowest per-email price shown, range across 8 pages | $35 to $300 per email |
| Lowest monthly retainer shown, range across 4 pages | $1,000 to $1,500 a month |

Download the 24 rows behind this table: [our-data-2026-11-02.csv](/email-copywriting-services/our-data-2026-11-02.csv) (each page checked, the URL, each yes/no, and whether we opened it in full).

**What it means for you.** All 4 single-provider service pages in our check hide the price. The pages that publish prices are mostly rate guides, not sellers. Only 3 of 24 mention anything past the writing, and just 1 mentions the law. So you will have to ask about sending, samples and compliance yourself. The questions further down do that for you.

## What email copywriting services include

Here is a full service broken into pieces. Most providers sell two or three of these. Mark which ones each quote covers.

| Service piece | What it is and what to check |
| --- | --- |
| Research | Study of your offers, customers and competitors. Ask what they read before writing email one, and whether you pay for it separately. |
| Calendar | A plan of topics and offers by week. Check it follows your seasons, not a generic holiday list. |
| Subject line and preview text | The two lines people see first. Ask whether subjects get tested, and how. |
| Body copy and offer | The email itself. Check it sounds like you. See our [guide to owner emails](/guide-owner-emails/). |
| Template | The layout in your tool. Simple letter styles are cheaper to build. Ask who builds it. |
| Sending | Scheduling and pressing send each week. Most writing-only services leave this to you. Get it in writing. |
| List care | Removing bounces, honoring unsubscribes, keeping old names out. Ask who does it and how often. |
| Compliance footer | Postal address and a working opt-out in every email. Required by the FTC for commercial email. |
| Reporting | A short report after sends. Ask for replies and orders, not only opens. |
| Revisions and approvals | How many rounds, and who signs off. Each round you own is time off your shop floor. |

The two rows that decide your workload are sending and approvals. A great writer who hands you drafts still leaves you a weekly chore.

## What email copywriting costs in 2026

Outside prices below come only from pages we opened in full, as listed on November 2, 2026. Ours come from our own [pricing page](/pricing/). For the wider budget, including your email tool, see [what email marketing costs](/email-marketing-cost/).

| Pricing model | Published prices and the catch |
| --- | --- |
| Marketplace gig | The lowest Fiverr Pro email copywriter listing we saw started from $30 per project, as listed on November 2, 2026 ([Fiverr Pro](https://pro.fiverr.com/cat/writing/copywriting/email-copywriter)). Catch: you brief, you approve, you send. |
| Per email | $75 to $1,000+ by experience ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)). Catch: writing only, usually. |
| Per sequence | 5 to 7 emails: $500 to $6,000 ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)). Catch: built once, then it stops. |
| Hourly | $50 to $300+ an hour ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)). Catch: open-ended. Put a cap on it. |
| Monthly retainer | $1,200 to $3,600 a month, as listed on November 2, 2026 ([Upwork](https://www.upwork.com/hire/email-copywriting-freelancers/)); $1,000 to $8,000+ ([Fueler](https://fueler.io/blog/email-copywriter-rates-per-campaign-benchmarks)). Catch: scope varies widely. |
| Email Marketing KC pilot and review | 4-email pilot on a $600 to $1,200 written floor based on list size. Optional $747 [email review](/audit/). Catch: you keep paying for your email tool. |
| Email Marketing KC ongoing | $1,850/mo monthly or $3,900/mo [weekly](/weekly/). Daily by phone, $6,500 monthly floor. Catch: costs more than writing-only help. |

Do the yearly math before you compare. A weekly email at a mid-level $175 to $400 each comes to $9,100 to $20,800 a year for the writing alone. That is 52 emails times the Mediabistro range. Our weekly plan is $46,800 a year, and our monthly plan is $22,200 a year. Ours costs more. It also covers the research, the sending and bounce cleanup. Decide which of those you want to keep doing yourself.

One more check. If a quote is low, ask whether research of your offers and customers is in it, or whether you are expected to write the brief.

## Questions to ask before you hire an email copywriter

Ask these on the first call. A good provider answers fast and in plain words. Write the answers down.

- **Who presses send, and on what day?** If the answer is "you", price your own hour into the deal.
- **Can I see three emails you actually sent for a business like mine?** In our check, 0 of 24 pages showed real sample emails. Ask anyway.
- **What do you research before the first email?** Listen for your offers, your customers and your competitors. Not your logo colors.
- **Do I approve drafts, and what happens if I am slow?** Every day a draft waits on you is a day the send slips.
- **Do you work inside my current tool?** Moving platforms costs time and can cost you list history.
- **How do you handle the footer and opt-outs?** The [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) requires a valid postal address and a clear way to opt out in every commercial email.
- **Who cleans bounces and old names?** A dirty list raises spam reports. Gmail calculates spam rate daily.
- **What do you report?** Replies and coded orders tell you more than opens. See [why open rates mislead](/guide-open-rates/).
- **What is the price, in writing, and what is the unit?** Per email, per month, or per hour. Get the total for 12 months.
- **How do I cancel?** Month to month is the safest start. Know what is refundable before work begins.

## How to hire an email copywriting service, step by step

### 1. Count your real past customers

Export the list from your email tool, field CRM, QuickBooks or register. Remove duplicates and obvious junk. Note when you last emailed it.

*Time:* 30 to 60 minutes.

*Done when:* you know how many real customers you have, where the list lives, and the date of your last send.

### 2. Decide writing-only or written-and-sent

Be honest about your week. If you have not sent an email in three months, writing-only help will not fix that. You need someone who sends.

*Time:* 15 minutes.

*Done when:* you can say in one sentence who will press send every week.

### 3. Shortlist three providers with clear prices

Prefer providers who publish a price or quote one in writing after a short call. Skip anyone who cannot name a unit.

*Time:* 1 to 2 hours.

*Done when:* you have three names, three prices and three pricing units side by side.

### 4. Run the question list on each call

Use the questions above. Ask for real sent emails. Ask for the 12-month total.

*Time:* 30 minutes per call.

*Done when:* every provider has answered on sending, samples, approvals, compliance and cancellation.

### 5. Put the scope in writing

List the cadence, the send day, who owns the footer and opt-outs, who cleans the list, what gets reported, and how to cancel. The [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) says you cannot contract away your own responsibility, so keep a copy.

*Time:* 30 minutes.

*Done when:* both sides have signed or emailed "yes" to one page of terms.

### 6. Start with a short paid pilot and a tracking code

Four weekly emails is enough to see whether the writing fits and whether sending happens on time. Put a unique code on any offer. See our [unique code tracking guide](/guide-unique-code-tracking/).

*Time:* 4 weeks.

*Done when:* four emails have gone out on schedule and the code is live.

### 7. Review, then decide on a retainer

Look at replies, coded orders, unsubscribes and any spam complaints. Then choose monthly, weekly or stop.

*Time:* 1 hour.

*Done when:* you have picked an ongoing plan, or walked away with four useful emails and clear numbers.

## Mistakes that cost the most

### Buying writing and leaving drafts unsent: $700 to $1,600 a month wasted

At a mid-level $175 to $400 per email ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)), four weekly drafts that sit in a folder are $700 to $1,600 of paid copy doing nothing. That is four emails times the range. Fix: name in writing who presses send and on which day.

### Leaving compliance out of the contract: up to $53,088 per email

The [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) sets penalties up to $53,088 for each non-compliant email. Both the business promoted and the company that sends can be held responsible. Fix: require a postal address, a working opt-out and 10-business-day opt-out handling in the written scope.

### Mailing a cold list on day one: $175 to $400 of copy in the spam folder

At a mid-level $175 to $400 per email ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)), every send that lands in spam is paid copy nobody reads. Gmail's sender guidelines say spam reports should stay below 0.1% and never reach 0.3%, and bulk senders above 0.3% lose access to Gmail's delivery mitigation ([Gmail FAQ](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14229414?hl=en)). On a 2,000-name list, 6 spam reports is 0.3%. Fix: clean bounces first and start with recent customers who will know your name. Our [deliverability guide](/guide-email-deliverability/) covers the cleanup.

## DIY, freelancer, agency or done-for-you: the realistic options

| Option | What you get, what it costs, the catch |
| --- | --- |
| Do it yourself in your current tool | You write and send. Cost: the tool you already pay for, plus your hours. Catch: the send slips in busy weeks. |
| Marketplace gig | Quick single emails. Fiverr Pro listings from $30 per project, as listed on November 2, 2026 ([Fiverr Pro](https://pro.fiverr.com/cat/writing/copywriting/email-copywriter)). Catch: little research; you brief, approve and send. |
| Independent email copywriter | Better voice. $175 to $400 per mid-level email ([Mediabistro](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/)). Catch: usually writing only, with drafts to approve. |
| Full-service agency | Strategy, design, sending, reports. Price: quote only on all 4 single-provider service pages in our check. Catch: built for bigger brands and more tools. |
| Email Marketing KC | Research, writing from scratch, weekly autonomous sending, bounce cleanup. $1,850/mo or $3,900/mo; pilot from a $600 floor. Catch: costs more than writing-only. |

## How we compared the options

| Criterion (weight) | What it measures |
| --- | --- |
| Research and voice fit (30%) | Does the provider study your offers, customers and competitors before writing, and does it sound like you? |
| Sending handled (25%) | Does an email go out every week without you pressing send? |
| Price clarity (20%) | Is the price published or written up front, with a clear unit? |
| Compliance and list care (15%) | Footer, opt-out handling, bounce cleanup, and CAN-SPAM duties in writing. |
| Commitment risk (10%) | Can you test small and leave month to month? |

**Disclosure.** Email Marketing KC sells one of these options: monthly emails at $1,850/mo, weekly emails at $3,900/mo, and a 4-email pilot on a $600 to $1,200 written floor. We use no affiliate links. Outside prices are as listed on November 2, 2026. The scores below are our judgment, and we are biased. Each score is the weighted sum of the five ratings shown, rounded to one decimal. Re-weight them to fit your shop.

**Do it yourself**: Best for owners who enjoy writing and have a fixed weekly hour. Score: 5.1/10 (our judgment: research 4, sending 2, clarity 9, compliance 4, commitment 10). Trade-off: free on paper, but the send is the first thing to slip.

**Marketplace gig**: Best for a one-off promo email on a tight budget. Score: 4.7/10 (our judgment: research 4, sending 2, clarity 8, compliance 3, commitment 9). Trade-off: cheap words, but you carry the research, approvals and sending.

**Independent email copywriter**: Best for owners who already send weekly and want stronger copy. Score: 5.5/10 (our judgment: research 7, sending 3, clarity 6, compliance 5, commitment 7). Trade-off: good writing, still your send button.

**Full-service agency**: Best for larger brands that need design, automation and many campaigns. Score: 5.9/10 (our judgment: research 6, sending 8, clarity 3, compliance 7, commitment 4). Trade-off: quote-only pricing and more tools than a local shop needs.

**Email Marketing KC**: Best for busy local owners with a real past-customer list who want one email a week researched, written and sent for them. Score: 8.4/10 (our judgment: research 8, sending 9, clarity 9, compliance 8, commitment 7). Trade-off: higher monthly cost than writing-only help.

## Which option fits you

| If you are ... | Start with / watch out for |
| --- | --- |
| An owner who already sends weekly but hates writing | An independent copywriter paid per email. Watch for drafts that wait days on your approval. |
| A busy service business with 500 or more past customers | A done-for-you pilot. Watch that the send day and footer are in writing. |
| An owner with a list nobody has mailed in a year | A list review first. Watch for spam reports if you mail everyone at once. |
| A first-timer on a tight budget | DIY with the calendar template. Watch for the send slipping in busy weeks. |
| An owner who wants to sign off on every word | A per-email writer with set approval days. Watch the total cost of revision rounds. |

## Who this is not for

**Online stores that need automated flows.** Abandoned-cart and browse flows are a build project inside your platform, not a weekly letter. A flow specialist for your tool is the better hire.

**Businesses with no list yet.** A writer cannot help a list that does not exist. Collect emails at checkout, on invoices and at the counter for a few months first. Then hire.

**Owners who want a sales promise.** No honest writer can promise revenue from a list they have never seen. Look for providers who promise what they control, like sending on schedule, and who track orders with a code.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does an email copywriter charge?

A single email runs $75 to $175 from a junior writer, $175 to $400 mid-level and $400 to $1,000+ senior, per [Mediabistro's 2026 table](https://www.mediabistro.com/employer/blog/trends/freelance-copywriter-rates/). Copywriter retainers there run $1,000 to $12,000+ a month. Always ask whether sending is included.

### Is email copywriting profitable for a small business?

It can be, but only your list can answer that. Multiply past customers by the share likely to take a seasonal offer, then by your average job. Test it with a short pilot and a unique code before you sign a retainer.

### What is the 80/20 rule in copywriting?

It is a rule of thumb, not a law or a study. Copywriters use it to mean most of your effort belongs in the subject line and the opening lines, because those decide whether the rest gets read.

### Do email copywriters send the emails too?

Usually not. In our check of 24 pages, only 3 mentioned sending or list management. Get the sender and the send day in writing before you sign.

### Who is responsible for CAN-SPAM if I hire someone?

You are, along with whoever sends. The [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business) says you cannot contract away your responsibility, and both the business promoted and the company that sends can be held liable.

### How long before I know if a writer is working out?

About four weeks. A four-email pilot shows whether the voice fits and whether sends go out on time. Put a unique code on any offer so you can count orders.

### Do I need a big list to hire help?

No. A few hundred clean past customers is a workable start. Twenty thousand old addresses nobody has mailed in years is a bigger risk than a small, recent list.

## Next step: start the 4-email pilot

If you have a list of real past customers and no time to write or send, start small. The 4-email pilot is four weekly emails researched, written from scratch and sent autonomously from the tool you already use, on a $600 to $1,200 written floor based on list size. We guarantee one email goes out every week and that people on your list will open it. Read the [pilot terms](/pricing/#pilot), see [how it works](/how-it-works/), or call (816) 300-1791.

Fit check: if a standard marketing investment is a line item for your business, the pilot makes sense. If you are still running a smaller operation, wait until it is.
