Email marketing for specialty running stores in Kansas City
Independent run shops. Letters that sound like the person behind the counter. Not a national brand calendar.
Who this is for
Independent specialty running stores with past customers on file. Gait fits, race calendars, shoe rotations, and gear that needs a human recommendation. Best fit: a few hundred to a few thousand real buyers in Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Constant Contact, HubSpot, or a POS export.
Corporate chain email will always sound like corporate chain email. Your edge is the counter voice. That is what I write for Kansas City indie shops.
The problem I see
Many indie shops either go silent or paste a vendor template. Silence loses the rotation cycle. Templates make you sound like the big box you compete with. Neither books the next fitting or the next race prep purchase.
Broken or half-written email programs are common. The fix is not more automation. The fix is owner-voice letters on a schedule you can keep.
ICP math (illustrative, not a promise)
Example only. 2,200 past customers. Two percent respond to a seasonal or rotation note. Average basket $180. Your numbers will differ. Soft goods tickets are smaller than flooring, so list quality and cadence matter more. The pilot still proves whether the list earns before a retainer.
Sample email angles
- Subject: when that pair has 300 miles on it. Premise: rotation reminder in the fitter's voice.
- Subject: race week, without the corporate calendar. Premise: local race prep, not a national blast.
- Subject: what we laced up this week. Premise: shop floor story, clear next visit ask.
- Subject: winter miles and the shoe that fits them. Premise: seasonal gear without fake urgency.
What I write
Owner or fitter voice. Short. Specific. No stock photo captions. Unique codes when there is an offer so we can see what the email caused. Opens stay a soft metric. Visits, replies, and coded sales are the point. See specialty retail email that does not sound corporate.
How we start
4-email pilot first. Then monthly or weekly based on how often your floor has something real to say. Related: work, owner-voice, how often to send, industries.
Category-only proof lives on the work page unless a shop asks to be named.
List sources I work with
Email tools: Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Constant Contact, HubSpot, or similar. Field CRMs: ServiceTitan, Jobber, and cousins. Books: QuickBooks customer exports. POS or register exports. I work inside what you already pay for when it works. I will not move you for sport.
Path after the pilot
Pilot first. Optional $747 review if you want a 90-day calendar before performance terms. Setup when we are keeping the system. Monthly at $1,850 as the bridge. Weekly at $3,900 when tickets and follow-up justify it. Daily is phone-only and rare. Full ladder on pricing.
What I optimize for
Replies and jobs from people who already bought. Unique codes on offers. Approval before send. Soft on open rates after Apple Mail Privacy Protection. Hard on whether the email caused work you can see.
Fit check
If your average job is tiny and you only want a monthly coupon, hire a cheaper blast vendor. If one job is worth thousands and the list is real, start the pilot. Call (816) 300-1791 if you want a straight answer on fit before you fill out a form.
