Gmail can show your deal before the email is opened

Google's developer pages describe Promotions tab annotations that can show a deal, a code, and an end date right in the inbox list.

Gmail's Promotions tab can show a deal in the inbox list before anyone opens the email. Google calls these annotations. Its developer pages say they can show images, deals, and expiration dates. A deal annotation can carry the offer, a promo code, and an end date.

They are not automatic. The sender adds them as markup in the email's code. Google says several factors, including quality filters and frequency limits, affect whether they show, and some people who get the email may not see them.

Google also describes deal cards, visual summaries of your promotion that Gmail generates from the same kind of markup. Either way, the inbox software is reading your email. So make the email easy for the inbox's own software to read:

  • Say the offer plainly. Put it in the subject or the email text.
  • Write the end date out. A real date, not "soon."
  • One offer per email. One clear offer is easier for people and software to read.

If your email tool supports Promotions annotations, ask about it. None of this makes Gmail show a deal. I write in your voice, and you approve every email before it goes out.
